Two Sangha Holiday Potluck
Holiday Pot Luck and White Elephant Party December 21 from Noon to 4 pm in Silver Spring, MD

Tea Ladies Zen Practice
We start at 4:30 pm on Sunday, then do silent meditation followed by koan study. After the koan is read and presented, all of us have an opportunity to share our experiences with it, and we end at 5:30. We use Way of Council in our sharing with each other.

The first Sundays of the month we spend the last Zazen period in community sharing, tea and Sangha. This night we are bringing and sharing prayer flags that we make out of napkins, paper, cards, cloth, with words for wishes, hope, peace.

Annual Women’s Zen Sesshin
The Bodhisattva Way : A woman’s path. This will be our 7th annual women’s Zen retreat open to all who identify as women. During Sesshin, we focus on zazen, breath and walking, deep listening to what is around us and what compassionate response may be available for us. At this women’s retreat, we focus on women’s ancestors, stories and the awakened path of the Bodhisattva. Sesshin can be rigorous. It is strongly suggested you have sesshin or extended silent practice experience, of at least one day in silence to attend.

We start at 4:30 pm on Sunday, then do silent meditation followed by koan study. After the koan is read and presented, all of us have an opportunity to share our experiences with it, and we end at 5:30. We use Way of Council in our sharing with each other.

Sunday Zen Practice - Day of the Dead Meditation and Celebration
Join us for a special Day of the Dead celebration honoring our loved ones and ancestors. Bring a photo or memento to place on the candlelit altar. Following one 30 minute meditation period, all may offer a poem or amusing story, or celebration of the life remembered. Or just remain in silence as witness and perhaps do walking meditation outside. We will close with refreshments and community sharing. Please bring a snack to share if you wish.

Quarterly Board Meeting
All are welcome. Listen to discussions and provide input into the business aspects of our Sangha. Discussions range from spending resources on Zen teaching, rental and retreats, to ideas for community-building activities. A Zoom Link will be sent out in the October Newsletter.

Sitting in retreat is vital to Zen practice—it is a rare opportunity to deepen your spiritual practice through extended silent meditation, walking, eating in silence together as Sangha community.

Join the Joyful Mind Zen Community for its Sunday Zazenkai Rockville United Church in Twinbrook/Rockville, MD (one mile from Twinbrook Metro/red line). Wear comfortable clothes. Bring a bag dinner and any snacks you wish to share. Tea is provided. You are welcome to stay for all (2-8:30 pm) or half (2-6 pm) of the retreat. Address: 355 LInthicum Street, Rockville, MD 20851.

Cushions and chairs provided, but you may bring your own bench or cushion.
Arrival and Schedule:
Enter at the back door of the church and look for a sign. Park in the front of the church and walk through the garden to the back, or park in the back lot. Arrive at 1:45 pm to find your seat. Bell rings at 2:00 pm for first sit. If you are late, please sit in the hallway chairs until the next Bell rings. The schedule includes 25-minute periods of sitting, interspersed with walking meditation, rest or tea breaks, Teacher talks and interviews, chant practice.

Jukai Ceremony
One Heart Sangha is hosting a morning Zazenkai followed by a Jukai Ceremony, which is a formal ceremony for those who will receive the Bodhisattva Precepts. Senseis from Joyful Mind Zendo, One Heart Sangha, and Harbor Light Zendo will offer the precepts to their respective students. Mike Heymsfield and Sarah Farmer from Joyful Mind Zendo have completed Precepts study, and spent a year preparing, sewing a Rakusu and creating an ancestor and personal Zen lineage.
If you come to the Zazenkai, arrive in time to be settled into the zendo by 8:55 AM for the first bell at 9 AM. The Jukai will be after the lunch break; please bring a bag lunch. There is a suggested donation of $25. The link to the event is HERE.
