Zazenkai means a “day of Zen” practice. This deepening extended period of practice includes rounds of Zazen, Kinhin, Tea break, Dharma talk from the teacher, and dokusan (private conversation about practice). Zazenkai are suitable for those who can sustain several periods of 25-minute meditation.
You may bring a bag dinner and stay through the evening Zazen until 8:30 pm
Join the Joyful Mind Zen Community for its Sunday Zazenkai Rockville United Church in Twinbrook/Rockville, MD (one mile from Twinbrook Metro/red line). Wear comfortable clothes, non-distracting. Bring a snack to share. Tea and coffee is provided. Enter Zendo at the back door/lower level. Look for signs. Shoes removed in the Zendo, so bring slippers or socks if you wish for walking meditation.
There is no charge to attend, but donations are appreciated to support our costs. Teachings are offered freely and teacher donations (dana practice) also appreciated. Cushions and chairs provided, but you may bring your own bench or cushion, or sit in a chair.
Typical Schedule: (25 minute Zazen periods, with 5-10 minutes walking meditation)
1:00 doors open, set up zendo
1:30-3:00 Zazen Kinhin and Opening Chants
3:00-3:15 Tea rest break
3:15-4:45 Zazen, Dharma talk, Dokusan
4:45-5:00 Tea rest break
5:00-6:00 Zazen Chant and Kinhin
6:00-6:30 Way of Council and Closing Zazenkai
If you are staying for Evening Zazen 7:00-8:30, bring a bag dinner. There are tables and benches for eating.
