Our teaching and instruction, practice spaces, and community activities are free to all. There is no requirement to become a Member. Please consider offering a donation to keep our Meditation spaces open to all.
There are no membership dues. People bring offerings of financial support or flowers, incense, food, readings, and most importantly, their own sincere practice. However, we rely on donations to keep our meditation spaces open, and to support our activities. A Member is anyone who considers themselves a Member and contributes to our Zen Community.
We are a Federally recognized Non-Profit 501 c (3) organization and your donations are tax-deductible.
Please consider a regular donation, whatever is possible for you depending on your personal circumstances. We have suggested Donations:
Sustaining Member or Friend: We appreciate a Monthly donation of $10,20, or 30, or one-time Annual donation of $240-360. Thank you!
Attending a Zen Retreat is a good time to express gratitude to our Community, outside of a residential retreat and lodging fee. Donation and suggested amounts to the Zendo or Teachers are listed in Events.
General Donations: Any amount at any time is appreciated!
We hope you have been supported by the work of our organization. Your gifts allow us to do this work. If you wish, consider longer-range giving to Joyful Mind Zendo. See below.

Alternative Giving Ideas
IRA Giving
If you are over 70-1/2 years old, you are eligible to give a gift directly from your IRA. This can have a tax advantage, since it can achieve the effect of itemizing even if you don't itemize. Your broker can advise you on the details.
Gifts of Stock
Do you have appreciated stocks or other marketable securities? If so, transferring them to JMZ can leverage your gift, since it will generally avoid capital gains tax. Your broker can tell you how to transfer the securities to JMZ's account at Vanguard. Our Treasurer, Jack Harllee, (202)986-3838, can give your broker the necessary information.
Donor Advised Fund
Your broker may have set up a "Donor Advised Fund" for its clients that you can use. Such a fund can have tax advantages, though there generally will be a fee to pay.
Giving on Death
A gift in your will or revocable trust will support JMZ. Your lawyer will be able to advise you on this, and prepare or amend the necessary documents. He or she should consult with our Treasurer, Jack Harllee (202)986-3838.
You should consider consulting your tax adviser on these alternatives.
