Who is a member of our community?

All who come to practice with us are members of our community of practice (also called Sangha). Newcomers and students of Zen are all welcome. There are a variety of ways to participate in our Zen community.

Newcomers attend Introductory classes, receive instruction in Zen practice, meet with a teacher, join activities, and are encouraged to start a home practice. Newcomers often attend for a few months to see if Zen and Joyful Mind Zen Community is right for them

Become a Student.‍ ‍After a while practicing with Joyful Mind, a person may wish to join as a student and:

Receive our newsletter and abide by our Ethics Guidelines based on the precepts. Fill out a contact emergency form.

Practice zazen daily at home

Sign up for practice discussions (dokusan) with a dharma holder or teacher regularly

Attend Zendo and retreats as much as possible

Offer sustaining donations to the sangha and dana (offerings to teachers)

Take on service roles in the Zendo

Volunteer for Sangha roles such as helping with website, social media, social activities, zendo cleaning or organizing, or retreat assistance, bringing food or flowers

Serve on the Board or a Committee

Request to be a formal student
