ZAZENKAI or Day of Zen

Please join us for this longer more intensive Zen practice period. It is a rare opportunity to be able to sit in silence with others, supported in Zen sitting meditation (Zazen)

Join the Joyful Mind Zen Community for its Monthly Practice Period in the Aspen Hill Library, for Zen Meditation
Silence and Teaching, Walking Meditation, Tea Breaks, Teaching Instruction

Sit in Chair or on a Cushion. Please register in advance: Information@joyfulmindzendo.org or on Meetup. Suggested donation: $10-$20 to help us pay for the space.

REGISTRATION OPENS JUNE 10, 2024—2 or 3 night options, and a Reduced Rate option for those requesting it

Sesshin can be rigorous. You must have retreat experience, of at least one day in silence, in order to attend.

Sesshin is the Heart of Zen. Sesshins offer deep silence, Zen teachings and support for your practice and well-being, walking and sitting meditation, rest periods, serene meadow and ponds, outdoor kinhin.

Fee includes 2- or 3-nights private room, all vegetarian meals, linens, blankets and towels. Beautiful space in secluded wooded setting.

18 Private rooms each with sink, shared bathroom, desk. Healthy vegetarian meals are provided and requests for gluten or dairy free will be provided. The teacher will offer private one-on-one instructions on Zen practice.

OPTIONS AND FEES:

A) Option A Full Sesshin. $380 for Checks /$395 if paying online. 50% deposit by August 1 to hold space.

B) Option B Two-Night Sesshin. Friday night through Sunday lunch. $280 for Checks/$295 if paying online. 50% deposit by August 1 to hold space.

C) Option C Reduced Rate (3 spots: first come/ first serve) $300 for 3 nights/$200 for 2 nights. %50 deposit by August 1 to hold space

FULL SCHEDULE:

FRIDAY: Arrive 4:00-6 pm, Dinner with conversation 6 pm, Sesshin starts at 7 pm to enter into noble silence.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY: 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Zazen about 7 hours a day) Zazen, Kinhin, Chanting, Dharma Talk, Teacher interviews, tea breaks and personal rest throughout the day. Plus stretch/yoga. Physical accommodations are offered; speak to the Teacher.

MONDAY: 6:30 a.m. Zazen and Kinhin, ends with conversational lunch at Noon, closing circle and chanting.

Women's Zen Fall Sesshin Retreat

This two-night residential silent retreat, (or one-day option) is for those who identify as women in safe space, and is an opportunity to learn and practice Zen in an authentic Soto tradition. This is the warm, wholehearted practice of being with ourselves as we are, and with things as they are.  Care will be taken to assist beginners in settling into the silence that is all too rare in our busy lives.  Chairs and Zen cushions will be available or you may bring your own. 

Private room, shared bathroom and shower. Healthy vegetarian meals are provided and requests for gluten or dairy free will be provided. The teacher will offer private one-on-one instructions on Zen practice.

$75 One day Commuter non-residential option, two meals lunch and dinner. Arrive 9 am and depart 6 pm after dinner. $50 deposit to reserve.

$75 One day Commuter non-residential option, three meals breakfast, lunch and dinner. Arrive 6:15 a.m and depart 6 pm after dinner.
